Six months, three major tournaments, one historic milestone: the first half of 2026 was the most eventful period yet in the young history of Austrian pickleball. Time for a look back – and a preview of what's still to come.

January to March: A Growing Community

The year began where pickleball in Austria has its roots: in the community. In January, four structured play groups for different levels launched at Vienna's Europahalle – a sign of how professional the training scene has become. In March, Pickleball Vienna, one of the longest-standing meeting points of the local scene, celebrated its seventh anniversary.

April: Record Championships in Wiener Neustadt

From 17 to 19 April, the 4th Austrian Championships were held at Austria's most modern facility, Racket Revolution in Wiener Neustadt, with more than 140 entries across ten divisions, the largest national title event to date.

Two things stood out: the dominance of Katharina Alten (gold in women's singles and women's doubles) and Stefan Grubmüller (gold in men's singles and mixed) – and the many new faces on the podium. Joachim Schemm won the doubles title at his very first pickleball tournament, while Ilvy Wagner took mixed gold on her debut. A clear signal: the sport keeps attracting new talent, including from related racket sports.

May: Club Sport on the Rise

At the end of May, the 4th PFA Vienna Pickleball Open at the Vienna Sporthotel showed how broad the base has become: athletes from several PFA clubs claimed medals, from the beginner division to the ambitious categories. A highlight: entire families competed together. It is exactly this blend of competition and community that makes the sport so appealing.

June: The Austrian Open Make History

The undisputed highlight of the half-year followed in late June: the first BaseX Pickleball Austrian Open in Oberpullendorf – the inaugural edition of Austria's International Championships, featuring prize money in the open divisions, players from more than ten nations and 180 matches across 13 divisions.

The open-division titles went to international top names such as European champions Prycen Haas and Stephen Preissler (men's doubles) and Hungary's Bálint Bakó (men's singles), who will compete on the American APP Tour going forward. From an Austrian perspective, Thomas Knapp and Stefan Urban impressed with bronze in the men's doubles. The finals were broadcast live on Streamster, the first time for pickleball in Austria. What the Half-Year Reveals About the Sport

Three trends run through the first six months:

The infrastructure is growing. With Racket Revolution, Austria now has a facility of international standard, mobile courts are making the sport more flexible, and the number of venues keeps rising – you'll find an up-to-date overview on our venue page.

The level is rising. International stars are coming to Austria, local players are measuring themselves against Europe's best – and crossovers from tennis, racketlon and padel are noticeably raising the standard of play.

The community carries it all. Whether club tournament, open play or family doubles: the foundation of this growth remains the open, welcoming pickleball community.

Outlook: What Awaits in the Second Half

The highlight is already set: in December 2026, Europe's elite will gather for the Arlberg Pickleball Championship in St. Anton – the RTA European Finals, including an amateur tournament for ambitious recreational players. In between, open-play sessions, club tournaments and the outdoor season offer plenty of opportunities to pick up a paddle yourself.

After six months, the verdict is clear: pickleball in Austria is growing (at grassroots level, at the top, and internationally). And the second half of the year has every chance of raising the bar once again.
